April 2013
Dear Elephants, Humans and Birds,
We are lucky tonight as our guest speaker is an EAGLE OWL. Eagle owls are one of the largest of all owls and are native to Eurasia. Zena, our eagle owl guest speaker, is the beloved pet of wild life rehabber and club member, Lisa Acton. Lisa has presented to our club before, but this is Zena's first time and she is so very welcome to be here.
Did you know that it is not possible to eat breakfast with a cockatiel trying desperately to pull your bagel out of your mouth. Zeke will not eat any treats that I put in his own dishes, but he must share everything that I eat, either by walking across my plate on the table, or pulling it from my mouth. He becomes frenetic, rushing back and forth between my shoulder and my face, as he tries to pull some of whatever I am eating.
Cockatiels are wonderful pets and I was going to say that they were pretty unobtrusive, as parrots go. That was until I noticed the hole in the corner of my wall that Zeke was able to make as he stands on the corner of the picture frame he ruined. At this point he seems to be in a contest with Emma, my yellow nape, to see who can do the most damage to my house. Emma used to be out all the time, as it should be. At this point, however, Emma can only be out of the cage when he is supervised. There is just so much I am willing to have destroyed.
PLEASE let me (or Matt) know if you want to have your parrot sexed next month. We will be having a sexing clinic led by our three veterinarians, Dr. Stein, Dr. D'ambbraccio and Dr. Jaramillo. We need a count of the number of birds that will be utilizing this service, and I hope enough of you have birds that you want sexed to make this very worthwhile. I believe that the more parrots we have sexed, the less money it will cost. I am hoping to get our esteemed vets to explain to the club members: how parrots are sexed by examining their chromosomes.
June is going to be a propicious month for us as our guest speaker will be Paula Ashfield. Paula runs the Under My Wing Avian Rescue, a parrot sanctuary, in New Jersey. This will be the first time this organization has presented to us. Club member Mary Loudin found Paula for us.
Aristophanes has decided that all humans should be slaves to the needs of all scarlet macaws. To that end he has decided to initiate this program by using me. Unfortunately for me, it works........Oy, it is not easy to be a servant to a big red bird with a big beak. (I think he got that idea by talking to my 15 year old dog, Lola, who feels the same way about me)
Have the best month people. July will be our 27th anniversary............
Love,
Richie
