February 2020
Dear Elephants, Birds and Humans who are literate,
Today is my birthday, which I usually celebrate for a month in both directions. Birthdays are special. They are the day
your mother presented you to the world and therefore added not only a being but a special one because it is you. Matt
takes deference to this, but he should because he is not as special as the rest of us. Anyway, happy birthday to me.
Jeff Joyce, also a bird club member and my best friend, celebrates his birthday Sunday, February 16th and my Opie's
birthday is February 17th. Opie will be 7 and he is such a good boy. I bought him a Trump doll for his birthday and he,
very appropriately, chewed it to bits. Jeff, Opie and I all celebrate together.
This has not been a very cold or snowy February. I used to love when the snow was a few feet high. I love watching it
fall, I love walking in the snowy woods with my dogs and just seeing how beautiful the world becomes after a nice
snowfall. I think I like winter best as far as seasons go. I love watching the wild birds at my feeder fluttering and landing
and picking their favorite tidbit. I think that seeing a cardinal on the snow or a blue jay is one of the prettiest vistas.
People argue with me about the problems of the cold winter and the snow and their complaints are all valid, but it is really
just such a treat every year. My dogs, Opie and Edison love to play in the snow all day and my chickens love it too.
Myron, my big dark Brahma rooster, led the hens out into the snow for a long walk yesterday. I enjoy watching them.
Maybe I will bring Myron to our April meeting when Craig Russell comes back to us.
I don't usually advertise birds for adoption here, but I need a great home for a cockatiel that likes to fly freely through the
house and hang out with you. If you know anyone who would be interested please let me know. I will not adopt this bird
to just live in a cage so I am not giving her to anyone who would keep her like that or has lots of other birds. She loves
attention.
Aristophanes and Emma are doing well. I have to move Emma out of the elephant room to see if I can get him to step up
again like he used to. Glen Sorino, our parrot whisperer, recommended that. Maybe he will act differently if he is in a
different surrounding.
Aristophanes is getting more used to the cage and it is not so bad because I take him all over the house with me.
I have a good home for a macaw, if you know of one that needs re-homing.
Tonight was supposed to be a program presented by Gary Keaton, a noted archaeologist from the Bashakill. Gary got
sick and so I am trying to switch him with Concetta Ferigammo of the AFA, who was supposed to come to us in March.
Let's see what happens I am doing my best.
We have programs scheduled until August. Not an easy task but with the help of Pat and Matt, I was able to do it.
Be well, everyone have a great birthday when it is your time of year and I wish the same to all your animals.
Love,
Richie
