April 2019
Dr Humans, Birds and Elephants.
So, I found out that Aristophanes loves oranges. He has been eating them like crazy. I thought he
just loved grapes, but oranges are his new favorite. I love the way he bites into the orange
section and then holds his big macaw head up and lets the juice run into his throat. Emma likes
them too, but not as much as Aristophanes. I remember that Peabody, my double yellow head, loved
oranges while Moonflower, my grey, wouldn't touch them or any of her other food if I put an orange
in her cup. Parrots are so different and their tastes vary so much.
What a crazy time. I was finding myself spending more time with the birds, dogs, cats, chickens
etc, but now Jackie is not going to work and so we spend time together too, even tough she is
working on her doctorate which takes up most of her waking hours. We were supposed to go to
Arizona, for her graduation, in June, but that has been cancelled.
Hanging out with the birds or walking in the woods with the dogs is fun, but I want to get out. I
want to do something that doesn't involve staying home.
I actually went to the supermarket the other day for some things we needed and I saw so many people
acting in so many different ways. There were some I wanted to smack in the head. There I was, as
were so many other people, with my mask and my gloves and keeping my distance while there were some
people with nothing on their face or hands handling all kinds of products, including fruit and
vegetables and putting them back and being completely nonchalant, like the Covid 19 does not exist.
These people pay no attention to the crisis we are all facing and put, not only themselves in
danger, but all the rest of us as well. These are frightening times and we have to protect
ourselves. We have to be thoughtful and we have to act wisely. I have to have the cleanest hands
in town, I wash them constantly. I hope that all you who read this are acting intelligently and
responsibly too. The life you save may be your own!
I have had a lot of time on my hands so I watch the birds at my window feeder. They are so
beautiful and so busy and pleasant to watch. I have chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, cardinals,
purple finches, goldfinches to name a few. I love watching them go about their business and raid
my feeders. I fill them so many times each day. I know they don't really need the food, at this
time of year, but I enjoy seeing them so much that it is worth it to me to keep giving them what
they enjoy.
We had to cancel our program again this month, but we are writing our newsletter that will be sent
on line to all our members. Those who have paid for their hard copies will have them sent in the
mail and so will a few people who have no computer.
I am especially sad about missing Craig Russell, our chicken guru. I love his program and the rare
breeds of chickens he brings. I believe that he drew the most people we have ever had. They saw
his program advertised in the paper and they came from far and near to hear him speak. He is the
president of the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities, and is very well known for
his erudition of all things chicken, duck, goose, turkey etc. I have enclosed some pictures of my
chickens for Matt to print in honor of this months program that we are going to miss. Craig
rescheduled for October. Hopefully things will be better by then and our lives will return to
normal. Actually, hopefully, it will be way before October, but I am an optimist.
If by any chance we can have a meeting next month, it will be the vice president of Audubon who
Matt secured for us. It remains to be seen. We have some great programs coming up, just let us
hope we can have them.
Stay safe, use your head and don't put yourself in any more danger than you have to with this
plague of a virus that is affecting our lives here and around the world.
Write articles for the newsletter and send pictures of your birds or other birds or wild birds,
please.
