April 2014
Dear Humans, Elephants and Birds,
I rearranged our program for this month by switching my chicken guru to August. There was a strong possibility that I was not going to be at this meeting and I did not to miss hearing Craig Russell speak. My father in law is very ill and he is in Florida, so I did not know if I would be there or here on the night of the bird club meeting.
I have arranged for us to see a beautiful and thought provoking video of macaws in the wild along with what is happening to them in captivity. We have learned so much about these beautiful birds that we are drawn to and we love so much. The horrors of catching them and the cruelty of such a magnificent creature spending its life in a cage instead of flying freely and living as nature intended is discussed in this eye opening video. There will be lots of time to discuss all of this after the program.
My macaw and my Amazon are doing well. I would set them free tomorrow, but they would never be able to survive so they are stuck living with me and whoever gets them after I am dead. They need so much more than I am able to give them. There are some parrots who seem to do ok as human family members, but not too many. They live a very long time and have so many needs that are difficult to meet as we, as humans, go about our own lives.
Next month we have Gene Weinstein coming back to us to do a beautiful photographic program on bald eagles. John Haas will be presenting his program on wild birds in June that he was originally scheduled for in February when we had such terrible weather. We need a special program for our anniversary meeting in July. Please give me your ideas for that meeting if you have anything or anyone that you would like to see and hear. It will be our 28th anniversary.
Take care of yourselves and do give your birds as much as you can; they need and deserve it.
Love,
Richie
