August 2010
Dear Humans, Elephants and, of course, Birds,
Aristophanes is playing under the couch. Emma is playing on the table top throwing things off and listening to
them fall and Zeke is high on top of the cabinets, singing his little heart out, and loving the sound of his repetitive song. So goes my bird life at home.
Chicken-wise, also birds, I have the sweetest little pullet. I bought 8 pullets (young females) as day old chicks on April 28th, Six of these were New Hampshires, my all time favorite breed and the other two were black Jersey Giants. They are all really nice chicks, though not all pullets as promised. One is a cockerel, (Matthew) a young male. I really don't mind that as long as the old roosters leave him alone and let him live. But, I digress. One of the New Hampshire pullets, Gladys, is a total doll. Each evening when I lock them in for the night, she runs to me and I have to pick her up and hold her. She likes getting hugged and held. Chickens really can make great pets. I marvel at the fact that the old breeds are coming back in popularity and that people in the city have them as
companions, even those that live in apartments. I feel like a trend setter.
Our program-agenda for the next 6 months is quite full and exciting. Tonight, August 12th, brings back Amy Hopkins to present a talk on Loro Park. Loro Park is a place in Teneriffe in the Canary Islands, off the coast of Spain. There are more parrots species bred there than any place in the world. They do not, thank God, breed to service the pet industry, but to provide for the preservation of parrot species in the world.
In September we will have a program provided by a wildlife rehabilitator and a raptor specialist. October is chicken month again; Craig Russell is going to come back with an assortment of Dorkings. This is a very old breed, originally brought into Britain by the ancient Romans.
November brings us Dr. Don Factor. Dr. Factor is an avian veterinarian whom we have not seen for many years
and we are very excited that he is coming back to us. His office is in Newburg. Our holiday party and penny social will be taking place in December and we have another rehabber who specializes in birds coming to us in January.......Our plate is full.
Actually, it is not too early to think about our next show in October. Our shows are always held the Sunday of Columbus Day Weekend. Our shows are educational "extravaganzas" and the best doggone bird shows in the state..............Little Matthew Frumess will be providing more information on that.
I spent the day with Fritha, the elephant I love and my sister in law came with me. Fritha liked her very much and I was quite pleased about that. We bathed Fritha with a hose and she had a great time. I generally feed lunch to that sweet beast twice a week, but today was special and I was glad that Roni, Jackie's sister, was able to share the time with me.
Have a wonderful month, people, and PLEASE make sure that your dues are current if they are due in July. Most of us go from July to July. Some of us pay in October because they joined at the show and some of us have scattered dues dates....Please be aware and pay on time. It is really helpful; see AnnMarie if you need information on when your dues are due.
Take care of yourselves and lots of love,
Richie
