Dear Elephants, Humans and Birds,
I am still reveling in the joy of our 30th anniversary. We had a wonderful time in a beautiful venue. I look forward to the next 30 years and, man, will I be old when we reach that milestone. Happy Anniversary, people, Happy Anniverary.
I must begin this letter extolling the virtues of and offering a tremendous thanks to our wonderful club secretary, Mark Spina. Mark is unselfishly taking care of another member's birds. Mark is going to her house, feeding, watering and cleaning these birds as our other member recuperates in the hospital where she is suffering from a protracted illness. Thank you, Mark, you embody the spirit of the Catskill Exotic Bird Club and you are a great guy.
My birds are doing well. Aristophanes is enjoying life on his new, augmented bird stand. We add new and varied sized perches, cups and accessories to the bird stand. It gets bigger he enjoys it more. Emma is doing well, but has to be watched so he does not destroy the elephant room. He has already chewed up the bottom of the couch, the picture frame on the wall in back of the piano and the molding on the wall near the floor. Emma is a character. Zeke is, unfortunately, having his freedom somewhat limited because of Edison, our sealyham terrier puppy. They need constant supervision when Zeke is flying around the house and I hate to keep him in his cage and he hates being there as well. I am hoping that things get easier as Edison gets older. He gets his time out, but is it is constantly supervised.
This month is going to be a fun meeting as we all make bird toys together to take home for our birds. Bird toys can cost a pretty penny because they are consumable and have a very short life, especially if our birds like them. The toys we make tonight cost very little because the bird club covers most of the materials. Anyone can bring what they want to add, but the bird club is covering the basics.
We are having an avian photographer as our program at our September meeting. I had gone into the Forestburgh Store on Forestburgh Rd, about a month ago, where I saw some incredibly beautiful pictures of birds being displayed there. Well, I have chutzpah, and the talented photographer who took those pictures will be presenting our program in September. We have a new avian veterinarian coming to talk to us at our October meeting, so that should be really exciting too.
Our big educational bird show is happening on October 8th, the Sunday of Columbus Day Weekend, at the Loch Sheldrake Fire House. Let's all do everything we can to make this the best show we have ever had. Matt will talk to us and tell everyone what part they can play in making our show terrific.
By the Way, I am performing in a show given by Chai on Music. It is Jewish music being presented at the Woodridge Village Hall on August 13th, at 2:00 to celebrate the Woodridge Centenial. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
Have a wonderful month and love your birds.
Love,
Richie
