December 2013
Dear Elephants, Humans and Birds,
Another holiday season has come upon us and the Catskill Exotic Bird Club is still going strong. In my house, Aristophanes is living, in the elephant room, on a bird stand so he can spend his time with Emmet (still trying to call him that) and Zeke. He is much happier there and he doesn't scream every time we try to watch something on TV in the living room. Of course, the amount of dirt he generates, because I keep buying him new toys to keep him occupied, is overwhelming but that is how it goes when you have a parrot.
On that note, our January meeting will be one of our "making bird toy" meetings so we can have lots of presents for our beloved (and, at times, rotten) avian companions.
Aristophanes and Opie, our puppy who is now over 80 lbs, are still best friends. Aristophanes spends a good part of his day on the edge of the tray of his stand with Opie licking and prodding him. They really seem to love each other. Aristophanes preens Opie's head and they even talk to each other, Opie speaking in his very vocal "hound" language that Aristophanes seems to understand.. Interspecies communication: adorable....... Just a note: these interspecies interactions need to be monitored....carefully.
An important note, we need to discuss handicap accessibility to our meetings. I got a letter from club member Karen Graves who has a very difficult time safely navigating the stairs to our meetings. Pat Bennett has also brought this up to me. I will speak to the bank, today, to see if they are planning on fixing the elevator. If this is not on their agenda, then we will search for another place to meet. We have been in the bank for all of our 27 years, but we need to be able to have everyone come to our meetings.
We are at the point, once again, where we need interesting speakers for our meetings. I have my "chicken guru", Craig Russell, coming to do a program for us in April but I need presenters for February and March. If you have ideas for people to me to contact, please let me know. Like I have stated many times in the past, I have no shame, I will call anybody.
Have the best holiday and New Year. Keep your wild bird feeders full, the wild birds appreciate the help we provide for them at this time of year. Enjoy tonight's dinner and penny social.
Love,
Richie
