December 2014
Dear Elephants, Humans and Birds,
When you read this Jackie and I shall be following a herd of rescued elephants through the jungle in Northern Thailand. These elephants are victims of such brutality and cruelty that everyone that is rescued is a reason for rejoicing. Bird club member, Judy Braun, is going with us and we hope to do whatever we can to help these wonderful, sensitive beings in their new lives without the pain and torture they had endured. You can check out the place we will be staying, and the elephants we will be meeting, by going to www.blesele.org.
Of course, I will miss the wonderful evening that all of you are enjoying at our annual holiday dinner and penny social, but lets face it....when it comes to being with elephants, they always win.
We are having a baby sitter for our birds, cats, chickens and Opie, who will be living in my house while we are away. Lola will be staying with her doctor, Lonnie Kasman, as I feel she is safest in his hands at her very advanced age.
Aristophanes will not be too thrilled because he will have to stay in his cage in order for her to care for him, but he will live out of the cage again as soon as we get home. Emma (Emmet) should be ok, he likes women and likes to talk to them and Zeke should be fine too.
Next Month, Dr. Joe D'abbraccio will be coming to speak to us and our February meeting will bring us Dr. Valerie Freer, president of local Audubon, as our program.
Once again, I am still waiting to hear from the new curator of birds at the Bronx Zoo. It is not easy to get him, but I am tenacious. Let me know if there is anyone else you want.
Have the best holiday, enjoy every moment of it and have the happiest new year.
I hope to see everyone at our January meeting.
Love,
Richie
