January 2012
Dear Parrots, Elephants and Humans,
I want to wish everyone a very happy and radiantly healthy new year. As a child I used to hear my parents and their friends say, “As long as you have your health, everything will work out,” I know now how right they were. Therefore, once again, I wish you all (humans, birds and elephants) the best of health in the coming year....and after that too.
My birds seem fine. Aristophanes has his allergic attacks, but other than that he is a healthy bird. Emma is doing really well and continues to play games with my cat Simon. Zeke is healthy and still enjoys his mirror in front of the toaster on the kitchen counter. I do keep a constant eye on Zeke, when he is out of his cage, because I don’t trust Simon around him. He, unlike the big birds, can be very vulnerable to that not so little (any more) black cat.
We have some great presentations to which we can look forward this coming year. It begins tonight with Joanna Hartel and her talk on the Andean Condor. Next month, my birthday month, Dr. Lonnie Kasman will present a program on the birds of Costa Rica. Renee Davis, of the Audubon Society is our speaker for March.......April is still open; anyone with a good idea should let me know what that is. We have Gene Weinstein coming to us in May to do a photographic program on the bald eagle. Lots of good stuff, I hope everyone is here at every meeting to learn and enjoy.
I am still waiting for a call from the Bronx Zoo about our trip. I will call again and remind them; maybe they have forgotten about us. Speaking of zoos, I am pretty exhausted from spending a great deal of time trying to stop the Reid Park Zoo in Arizona and the San Diego Zoo from splitting up two elephants that have lived together for the past thirty years. People can be so mean, especially those that mock people who acknowledge that animals have feelings. If you are interested in helping by writing letters or making phone calls, let me know and I will give you the information about this situation.
By the way, while we wait for the Bronx Zoo trip, if you have an idea for another club trip and you want to coordinate it, please let me know. Speak up, it would be great to have someone else take the reigns on a club program.
Check out our website and you will see that we now have a bird adoption application for people who want a bird to fill out. We can thank Pat Bennett for that. This way, we can have a list of those people who are interested in adoption and what they want to adopt.
It is late and I am going to sleep. I had a very busy day and a good part of that day was visiting with Fritha the elephant. That, however is always a wonderful time for me.
Have a great month, enjoy the above normal temperature while is lasts and make sure you leave enough food for your outside birds. Kiss your pet birds for me.
With Love,
Richie
