January 2013
Dear Elephants, Birds and Humans (but only if they can read)
A new year is upon us and so is our first bird adoption of this year. The Nanday conure, the last of the 4 birds surrendered by the man who "just didn't want to take care of them anymore", now has a loving home and we, hopefully, have new members in our club. Pat Bennett took and fostered all these birds until they were placed. Thanks so much to Pat for not only doing this, but for all the work she has done in bird adoption and bird fostering. She is amazing and works so hard to help birds and so many other animals as well. Pat does major work in rescuing and placing leonburgers. This is a very large, not so common, breed of dog. Pat is wonderful.
May all our club members and friends have the best new year ever and, of course, that is wished to all the birds and other animals in the world (especially elephants). Happy birthday to my incredible and beautiful wife, Jackie, who was born on New Years Day. The new year brought us a new dog. We adopted a very needy and neglected standard poodle. He is adorable and sweet, but has serious cat issues and so we are working on that . He needs to learn that to live in our house he must adjust to be part of The Peaceable Kingdom, so we are working on that. He is fine with the birds, but the cats are another issue. He came to us through club member Judy Braun who got a call about him and the desperate conditions in which he was living.
Aristophanes, Emma and Zeke are doing fine. Aristophanes has a bird stand that he hangs out on in the elephant room with Emma and Zeke and I do believe that he is happier with the avian company. His cage is too big to fit in that room where the other two birds live, so this gives him a chance to hang out with them and discuss business every day. Oh, there was a beautiful green winged macaw on TV last night. It was in a show called "Happy Endings".
Our club trip, to The American Museum of Natural History, is this Sunday. We have to work out all the logistics for that tonight. We will come and go on our own, getting together at the statue of Theodore Roosevelt on his horse on the Central Park West entrance to the museum. From there we will be meeting Peter Capainolo, our incredibly erudite and entertaining speaker from our club anniversary dinner, and he will give us an inside tour of the Avian exhibits of the museum. I, for one, am really looking forward to that.
Our speaker tonight is, founding club member, Rick Stein. Rick is an avian veterinarian, whose office is right here in Monticello. Rick does the check-ins for all the birds at all of our bird shows and has spoken on various topics related to Avian Medicine over the years. It will be great to learn from him again. Next month we have Missy Runyan, the director of Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center, located near Albany. March brings us a program from the Everything Animals Recourse Center, presented by Jan Eerlin who will bring white doves. Lisa Acton will be presenting again in April and she will be accompanies by her eagle owl, Zena. We are still open for May and June, so if you have ideas for programs just let me know.
Our website, www.birdclub.com, has a new interactive component. Please take advantage of it. Also, you can send your pictures of your birds and who they are to Robin Stears, our webmaster and she will post them on the site. The more we have, the bigger and nicer and more personal the site becomes.
If there is any club member who does not receive a post card or does not get reminder calls and emails and wants them, please let me know.
Again, have a very happy and healthy new year.............. Be well, smile a lot and love your birds.
With love,
Richie
