July 2015
Dear Birds, Elephants and all Humans who can read,
We, the people of The Catskill Exotic Bird Club, are celebrating our 29th anniversary. I think that is fantastic. Twenty-nine years ago, a group of people (several off whom are still here) came together from a newspaper ad entitled "Bird Lovers of the World Unite". Since then we have evolved into the most incredible bird club anywhere. We do good things for birds and for the people who love them. What is most important is that we are still together and we still like each other..............We LOVE our birds (and elephants) but that is another story.
The happiness of this anniversary, however, is overshadowed by the loss of our wonderful treasurer, AnnMarie McKeon. AnnMarie was a founding member of this club and held several offices in it. What was not AnnMarie's official job she did without question or hesitation. AnnMarie was one of those special human beings who had a spark that lit up everything she touched and of which she was part. She put her whole heart into whatever she did and we were so lucky to have her as an integral part of our club. We all miss her so much and that is why our 29th anniversary celebration, as well as our upcoming bird show in October, are dedicated to her and her memory.
AnnMarie had three beloved birds that were so very much a part of her life and her being. Her daughter, Donna, is taking Gandalf and Frodo, her grey and her cockatoo, to live with her in Florida. Those two guys are really tight and that way they will remain a family. Woody, AnnMarie's older red-lored Amazon, has gone to live with Debbie Napolitano-Lovett, and has wormed her way right into the heart of Debbie's family and that is a wonderful thing. I am sure AnnMarie would be very happy to know that her beloved birds are ok and that they will continue to live happy lives.
Next month we will be happy to have Kathleen Knight of the Stonehouse Poultry Sanctuary in Rhinebeck, New York as our speaker.
Tonight we have a very special program. We have Kevin Hils, Avian Collection Manager of the Bronx Zoo/ Wildlife Conservation Society. We welcome Kevin are so pleased that he has come to us to share all the wonderful ornithological programs that are going on in the WCS around the world as well as what is happening in the Bronx Zoo itself, bird-wise.
People, have the happiest anniversary and be kind and loving to every bird, elephant and other animal you meet.
With Love and looking forward to the next 29 years,
Richie
