Dear Humans, Birds and Elephants,
The missed meeting last month, due to the weather, was only the 2nd one in the 30 years we have been together. Gloria Waslyn and her Parrots for Peace, who were going to be our program in February, are now scheduled for August.
Tonight's meeting brings the return of Ellen Kalish, director of the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties. Ellen presented the first program we had when we moved from the bank to our new meeting room at 20 Crystal St. Ellen does excellent work as she rehabilitates injured wild birds and will be bringing owls, falcons and hawks with her for the club to see and whose histories they will learn. She is a very special person with a big heart, and the birds that she has been able to help are very lucky indeed.
Craig Russell, my chicken guru, will be coming back to us next month. He will be bringing his rare breed chickens and discussing the history of domestic poultry and how the many breeds were developed. I still have the two dark Brahma hens, Meg and Maureen, that I got from him last year when he came to speak to us. I also still have Clara, my white Orpington hen that Craig brought to me many years ago when we were still in the TD Bank. I love his programs and I love chickens.
Aristophanes, Emma and Zeke are doing well. Nothing terribly new in that department. I am supposed to be getting a puppy, a sealyham terrier, and that puppy will have to learn that those three birds are his new brothers. Opie, my big dog, is great with the birds and Aristophanes is his special friend.
We need to find a new venue for our 30th Anniversary party which will be scheduled for this July. Mr. Willy's was sold. They served us well for may years and now we have to find another restaurant, hopefully one that is easily accessible for everyone. I am also still looking for a special program for that evening. Let me know if you have any ideas.
February was a pretty mild month, although the weather on the day of our meeting was terrible. March has "come in like a lion". It is cold, but it should be better as the days go on. My outside bird feeders have been very well visited with lots of different wild bird species. There was a male cardinal on my window feeder this morning. They are so beautiful and so free.
Be well and I hope to see everyone in the club at all of our meetings.
Love,
Richie
