October 2014
Dear Elephants (and, of course, birds and humans that can read)
We are on our way to a possible new venue for our club meetings. After 28 years at the TD Bank, there seemed to be some problems happening. Those problems took the forms of 2 bathrooms that did not work. YUCH!..... Originally, the bank was not going to fix the bathrooms and so we began to look for another place to meet that would be as good as the bank. Now we found out that the bathrooms will be fixed (if they are not already) but we made plans to meet at 20 Crystal St, a new place that club member, Mark McLewin (Push Up's father) found for us. This place is handicapped accessible, something that the bank room, however wonderful, is not. We need to check out this new location and see if it has what we need and then decide if we would like to change our meeting place. We can decide this when we meet there tonight.
On the home bird front, Aristophanes is doing well but his damn allergies seem to have returned. They are not as bad as they were (I probably shouldn't say that) but they are back nonetheless. Emma (Emmet) is fine and finally let me take him into the bathroom for a shower; he looks great. Zeke is as playful and fun as ever; he flies all over the house looking for us and always manages to find us no matter how we try to hide.
I, with the help of Pat Bennett, have finished placing the 25 cockatiels that needed homes. That was a daunting endeavor, but I am glad it is over. I have more birds for adoption, if you are interested please let me know.
Our meeting, tonight, should be wonderful. Ellen Kalish, wildlife rehabber who specializes in birds, is back with us again. Ellen is a lovely and erudite person who will teach us all about wild birds that need help and how she helps them. She will also bring along some raptors she has helped. Her visits and talks are always great learning experiences for all of us.
Next month, Dr. Don Factor, from the Westend Veterinary Hospital in Newburgh, will be coming back to us and doing a talk on the parrot disease that used to be called PDD, or macaw wasting syndrome. This disease affects many more species than macaws and is something that all of us, who have and love pet parrots, should learn and know about.
December is our party month. We will have a covered dish holiday party and a great Penny Social. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bird)......
I am anxious to see this possible new venue for our club and I want to, once again, thank Mark McLewin for being so kind and procuring it for us.
Have the best month and we WILL have our bird show next year....................
Happy New Year to all our Jewish club members.
Love,
Richie
