October 2015
Dear Elephants, Birds and, of course, Humans,
Our 23rd Pet Bird Show and Educational Extravaganza is fast coming up on us. Our show will be held at the Liberty Fire House, at 256 Sprague St. in Liberty NY. This venue is large, light, clean and lends itself beautifully to our bird club's needs. Matt Frumess is the show chairperson, Mark Spina and I will do the education work, Jackie Chiger will man the kitchen, Barry Cohen and Francine Garber will be taking human admission and bird entries, Debbie Napolitano-Lovett will be the show secretary, Mary Lewis will be judging this year and Pat Bennett is the show treasurer. If I have left you out, let me know and I will apologize and acknowledge you. Matt has set us up with lots of interesting vendors, great raffles and everything else that will make for a super show, at least as good as those in the past.
We need EVERYONE to enter their birds. The more birds we have and the more varieties we get provides for a much better and fuller educational program. Our goal is not to sell birds, but to provide educated homes for birds. Homes where people know what they are getting into by adding a pet bird to their family and knowing how to take care of it.. People must understand that buying or adopting a bird is a major decision and a lot of work if you are doing it right. A pet bird should be a family member, not an ornament that stays in a cage. A parrot that is confined to a cage 24 hours a day is a prisoner, not a pet. We cannot stress that enough. We need all our club members at the show to spread the message about what it is like to own a pet bird and what it needs.
My pet birds are doing ok. Emma is going through a stage of being very friendly to me, but he will not go on my hand and I have no idea why. Aristophanes, unfortunately, is suffering from his allergies again. They are not as bad as they used to be, but they are there, UCCH. Zeke thinks he is brooding eggs. Male cockatiels will set with the females and raise young with them, but they cannot lay eggs no matter how hard they try. I keep telling him that but he doesn't want to believe me. He had breakfast at the table with me this morning like usual, but then he went back to the cage and sat himself down on the tray at the bottom of the cage. Any ideas?
Once again, I hope to see everyone at our show. I am sure Matt will have some job for you to do, just ask him. Tonight we are going to make bird toys. Please make as many as you want for yourself and your bird, and make at least one to put on the raffle table at the show.
Until next month............
Love,
Richie
