Hello Elephants, Humans and Birds......
I have a special program for us tonight and it is someone I actually found in Liberty, the town that has been hosting our Bird Show for 20 years. The program involves speaker, Renee Davis, who works at the Liberty Agway and knows more about birds than anyone I have met in a long time. Many is the time I have gone to buy a very special kind of chicken feed (my chickens are spoiled rotten and will only eat two specific kinds of feed from two different stores) and had the nicest and most interesting discussions about birds (including chickens) with her. It took me this long to lasso her into coming to the bird club and sharing her extensive and erudite knowledge with us....Well we have her now and, like all our great speakers, she will be cajoled into returning often. Tonight her presentation will be a power point (thank you for the equipment, Les Kristt) on The Birds of Brazil. I wish I could be there to enjoy this with everyone, but you will have to rely on Little Matthew B for this meeting because I will be out on the ocean looking for whales off Cape Cod.
My birds, for whom I have a bird sitter ....dog sitter,......cat sitter......chicken sitter......etc......are staying home. The place where we will be staying only allows human inhabitants. I think they were afraid that Wally, my crazy rooster, would attack them and therefore limited their species clientele to homo sapiens. I would have brought Fritha with us but she would not fit in the car.
Aristophanes has been a good scarlet macaw, Emma a good yellow nape and Zeke a good cockatiel. They are all enjoying a breakfast of fried eggs while I write this. Lola, my food obsessed dog, sits longingly by Aristophanes cage, while he eats his eggs and bagel and cream cheese, watching him, praying he drops a piece of something that she can frantically run and find me so that I can retrieve it for her. When she is done watching him she runs to Emma and repeats the same routine. This goes on every morning. You would think the dog was starving.
I rescued a duck last week right before the hurricane hit. It must have been stunned by a car because it was standing in the middle of the road and did not run away when I stopped my car and went to pick it up. Pat Bennett, who is the best animal placement person in the United States, found a great home for her (I named the duck Maria, it was a female) with 7 other rescued ducks and a pond...... That turned out to be one lucky little duck. Speaking of placements....I still need a home for a severely handicapped greenwing macaw. If you or anyone you know would be into devoting yourself to the care of this unfortunate creature, please let me know and I will tell you all about it.
Next month is a great month for us. Our 20th Pet Bird Show will be taking place at the Liberty Ambulance Building on Sunday, October 9th. Please be ready to donate your services and help in every way you can. We are focusing on children and their bird education this year. Sensitizing children and teaching them to be kind and aware is a great service to them and their world, and we are doing our best to do our share. Caitlin Rabbitt is promoting a school children's art and writing display for the show and Karen Graves is organizing a children's judging. Get in touch with either or both of them if you have any ideas concerning what they are doing. Everyone else should see Matt to find out how you can help make this our best show yet. Our program for our October meeting will be a retrospective on the show and will feature Dr. Rick Stein among others.
In November, our program will be presented by Leslie Wallace and her magnificent greater sulphur crested cockatoo, Lola.......Leslie has an amazing knowledge of parrots, their ways and qualities that she will share with us. December, of course, will be our covered dish holiday party and penny social....... So, our plate is still full. I am going to call the Curator or Birds at the Bronx Zoo, when I return from Cape Cod, and arrange our club's trip there. That should be a very interesting and educational experience for us...don't miss that. Also, please let me know about any other programs that you want.
Enjoy the month and happy new year to all our Jewish club members,,,,,,,,,,,,
Please pay your dues if they are not up to date.............
With Love..........
