Dear Birds and Elephants and Humans who are able to read this,
To all the Jewish birds, elephants and humans, I wish a happy and very healthy new year. I once had a parakeet that spoke Yiddish, but that is another story. Right now, Aristophanes is very angry with me. I put him in his cage. He climbed down to the floor and chased me because he thought it would be fun to bite my foot. I, however, did not think it was fun and put him back into his cage, so he is not too thrilled about that. I will take him out again when I am done writing this and we will discuss the situation.
Emma is playing with Zeke in the elephant room. I have to keep the door closed, but keep checking very often. Emma can do quite a bit of damage when he is unsupervised. Simon is running around and that cat thinks that Zeke is a toy........not a good thing, and so the door to the room is locked. I have talked before about how Simon, my not so little any more, black cat plays with Emma and even with Aristophanes. However, Zeke is just too small to be safe and so they are never together when Zeke is loose and flying around the house.
We are all getting more and more excited about our upcoming Pet Bird Show and Educational Extravaganza. (At least that is what I call it)... Caitlin Rabbitt has contacted all the schools in our area to have their children participate. We received some very nice essays and pictures from school children last year and hope to have even more to display this year. We give a free admission ticket to any child who participates. Please get in touch with Little Matthew B. and see what you can do to help make our show an even greater success than it has been in the past. The date is October 14th and the new venue is the Liberty Fire House.....for anyone who is still not sure.
Dr. Kasman's talk last month about the plight of parrots in the wild was wonderfully informative. I wish it had been better attended. Please, since your interest is birds, try to make it here for our meetings. Our speakers prepare some remarkable talks and they deserve a good size and appreciative audience.
This month we have an erstwhile member of our club, who has become very active in the Audubon Society, coming back to present for us. His name is John Haas and his knowledge about the birds of our area is really astounding. John has published books about birds and has traveled extensively to see them and learn about them. This should be a terrific presentation.
Next month we have a new avian veterinarian, Dr. Joe D'Abbracchio, coming here to talk to us, so don't miss that. He has also offered to help Dr. Stein check in the birds that come to our show. We welcome his practice to our area and wish him the best. We also have a great program coming in November. We have a woman who is not only a wildlife rehabber, but also has a great knowledge of parrots....should be exciting. December will be our covered dish holiday party and penny social.......so, our year is full.
Please send articles and pictures to Matt for publication in our newsletter; we can't do it without you. Also, PLEASE pay your yearly dues if you have not already done so. We are still very cheap, $24 for an individual and $30 for a family. ($18 extra to have the newsletter mailed to your home)
Be well. love your birds and give them a great and interesting life.
Love,
Richie
